Threshold: Behind the Scenes
by Gordon Lake
‘Threshold: Behind the Scenes’ won ‘Best Documentary’ at the Project 168 film festival.
I was excited about doing this piece because it was a Hollywood competition with an impossible production schedule. Meaning, while a team of people had one week to shoot, edit and turn in a film, you had only that same time frame to produce a documentary of them doing it.
I shot ‘Threshold: Behind the Scenes’ with my Canon XL H1 HD camera and edited with Sony Vegas Pro. Anything that has to be cut and finished fast I use Sony Vegas. Anything that can be worked on over time or parts of the project needs to be finished elsewhere (like sound and effects) I use Final Cut.
The film ‘Threshold’ was shot in 3 days on a Varicam using a dolly and a stedicam. We had a 10 ton grip truck. Sound was done in ProTools, edit in Final Cut, effects on the Autodesk Flame and color on a Divinci.
‘Threshold’ grabbed 11 nominations and 7 wins
After turning in the Behind the Scenes film for the competition, there was a lot of footage that didn’t make it into the final piece, so I began work on another version just for the crew.
After the nominations came in and we learned we had set a festival record, I decided to film the crew at the awards ceremony and add that to the film.
